How Coffee Is Decaffeinated – Part 3

First, we begin with a story really quick. Decaffeinated coffee for the first time by Ludwig Roselius, a German coffee merchant, in 1905, after receiving a consignment which had taken coffee soaked during a storm at sea. He experimented with coffee wet brine, and found that benzene could be used as a solvent to bond with the caffeine. Since caffeine is soluble in water at temperatures above 175 °, could boil the solution to separate the caffeine from coffee. With its process, the coffee was decaffeinated, but had lost much of its sapore.

For the record, Ludwig has improved its process and has continued to sell his discovery with the Sanka brand. Benzene is no longer used because it is deemed safe for consumption umano.

Today there are 3 methods commonly used to remove caffeine from coffee, with dozens of variants of these methods. Two common variations are direct and indirect metodo.

<b> European or Traditional Process - Direct Method </ b>:
process directly involves softening the beans by steam, then wash them for about 10 hours with methylene chloride or a ethyl acetate solution to absorb the caffeine from the bean. The solution is discarded, the beans are re-steam to remove any remaining solvent (methylene chloride boils away at 114 °, ethyl acetate to 104 °), then the beans are dried to moisture content iniziale.

< b> European process or traditional - indirect method </ b>:
Instead of being steamed, the coffee beans are soaked in hot water, which extracts the caffeine along with many of the oils. This solution is then treated with methylene chloride or ethyl acetate, which bonds with the caffeine. Then the solution is heated to the temperature at which caffeine and methylene chloride or ethyl acetate compounds evaporate. The oils are then reintroduced to the beans and the beans are then essiccati.

About 80% of decaffeinated coffee is processed using the traditional process, or European, and many serious coffee drinkers believe that this method makes for the best-tasting coffee. Others worry about the chemicals involved. Methylene chloride is considered a superior solvent since it can evaporate at a lower temperature and leaves virtually no trace in the beans, but it is an environmental hazard to workers of decaffeination plants, and it is known that damage the ozone layer. Ethyl acetate can be extracted from fruits and vegetables and is therefore considered a "naturally found" chemical, but most of ethyl acetate is used for decaffeination synthethically prodotto.

<b> or water Swiss Water Process <, / b>:
Also known as the process of water, this process does not use chemicals, but rather hot water, steam and osmosis to remove the caffeine from coffee in two phases. In the first phase, which is similar to the traditional, the indirect method, the beans are immersed in a solution of warm water to remove the caffeine and flavor oils. The beans used in this phase are then discarded. The solution is run through activated carbon filters to remove the caffeine, but leave the flavor oils. A new batch of seeds is then soaked in a solution. According to the laws of osmosis, the caffeine leaves the beans to Solutions uncaffeinated, but the flavor is the solution and beans is the same, so no flavor left fagioli.

The beans are then dried and shipped to roasters. The disadvantage is that the water treatment removes most of the caffeine. Some of the oils from the coffee bean are also removed, making it less saporito.

<b> hypercritical Carbon Dioxide Method </ b>:
In this method, which is not as popular as other methods, the beans are immersed in solution of liquid carbon dioxide to remove the caffeine. The liquefied carbon dioxide must be highly pressurized (73-300 atmospheres), which makes the logistics costs of this method a bit 'higher than other methods. After the caffeine is absorbed by carbon dioxide, or the pressure is reduced and carbon dioxide is allowed to evaporate, or the solution passes through a carbon filter to remove the caffeine. Although more expensive, the benefits of the carbon dioxide is that because carbon dioxide is not a noxious gas, the method is not harmful to health or the environment .

<b> Other methods < / b>:
Since there is no consensus on how best to eliminate caffeine from coffee beans, there are still ways again under sviluppo.

A new method is the process of <b> triglycerides </ b> ;. In this method, green coffee beans are immersed in a solution or hot water and coffee to draw the caffeine and the surface of the grains. Then, the beans are transferred to another container and immersed in oil for the taste of coffee, which were obtained from spent coffee grounds. The flavor oils contain triglycerides are a natural combination of fatty acids and glycerol, and after several hours at elevated temperatures, are able to remove the caffeine from the beans, while not affecting the sapore.

Another new method, and perhaps the future of decaffeinated coffee, is the cultivation of <b> Naturally Caffeine-Free Coffee </ b> from trees that were recently discovered in that produce coffee without caffeine. Depending on the variety of coffee, the caffeine content already varies significantly, from about 75 mg to 250 mg per 6 oz cup. Arabica coffee varieties normally contain about half the caffeine of the robusta variety of coffee and dark roasted usually has less caffeine than lighter roasts because the roasting process reduces caffeine content of the bean. A bean containing a tenth of caffeine as a normal bean has been found, so the ability to develop or find a bean without caffeine is probably a matter of tempo.

Coffee Makers and Common Sense – Part 1

I once bought a packet of coffee, mocha coffee from a local dealer and about a week and a half after the product was not good, quite understandably, do not hit me and went back to the dealer or get a refund or exchange my purchase coffee or other products related articles.
